Clinton Brown, 11 year-old Watford Hill Primary School student is Hanover Parish Council Youth Mayor for 2013-2014. Brown was named top youth following a competitive match on Monday November 18, in Lucea. His win was one of the highlights of Local Government Month celebrations, which included an exciting fun day promoted by the council sports club, church service at the Clifton Assemblies of Holiness Church, and the official opening of new dormitory and facilities for the parish infirmary.
After narrowly missing out on the big prize last year, Clinton’s previous experience enabled him to edge out Tyreek Friginette, the Knockalva Tech student who was favoured to win, and four other competitors. Tyreek was named Youth Deputy Mayor.
In his mastery of the topic: “In Fifty Years Jamaica Has Moved Forward,” Clinton traced the island’s socio-economic development and concluded that Jamaica “has moved, is moving and will continue to move dynamically ever forward.”
“Labour for learning before you grow old, for learning is better than silver and gold. Silver and gold will vanish away, but a good education will never decay,” he reminded his audience, comprised of Parish Council and civic officials, teachers and school observers.
In his thank you speech, Clinton engaged in friendly banter by advising his fellow competitors that they could consult with him if ever they “want to know how to win a competition.”
Clinton will participate in a number of activities for youth during his tenure. Other competitors included Daniella Bowen (Askenish All Age), Danielle Miller (Green Island High), Audria Jackto (Kendal Primary), and Rasheka Campbell (Sandy Bay Primary & Junior High).
